SIC RECEIVES DONATION OF ARTWORK

Thanks to Southeastern Illinois College president Dr. Jonah Rice and his wife, Megin, the college’s art collection continues to prosper. That’s according to Brent Webb, art instructor at SIC.

“The artwork Dr. and Mrs. Rice donated is a testament to the talent and work ethic we focus on in the art department,” said Webb.  “The piece, a painting by former SIC art student Mikayla Craig of Harrisburg, will be installed in our permanent collection on campus. Adding new work displayed on campus shows the arts program is a vital, exciting program at Southeastern,” he added.

Rice couldn’t agree more and feels that part of SIC’s mission is to be the cultural hub of the region.  “It’s a place where the college and its many community partners coverage to celebrate the arts,” said Rice. “The visual arts are a large part of that convergence. Throughout SIC, visitors can find a long history of attention to that dimension of our mission.” 

About the donation, Rice had nothing but praise for the artist, who also made a donation of her own by giving the painting to the SIC Foundation as an auction item at its last fantasy auction fundraiser 

“Megin and I are proud to donate this work by SIC alumna Mikayla Craig to the college’s permanent collection after purchasing it from the SIC Foundation’s fantasy auction. It’s a double gift we’re excited to offer,” said Rice. 

“Mikayla is a vibrant and talented artist and is devoted to giving back to her community,” said Julia Pfeiffer Scherrer, Craig’s former art instructor at SIC.  “It doesn’t surprise me that she and the Rices have teamed up to do something special for the art program at the college.”

The college encourages visitors to view its art collection displayed throughout the campus and to stop by the art gallery located on the second floor of the George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Center to enjoy the various art exhibits on display during the school year.
