SIC Reinstates Concert Band, Seeking New Members

After over 20 years of silence, music will again be played by the Southeastern Illinois College Concert Band. Currently, SIC is seeking members to help reconstruct the concert band beginning spring semester. The class is for SIC students as well as the community, and family musicians are encouraged to participate. For in-district residents, tuition is waived for the class.

According to Bruce Boone, retired SIC music instructor, it has been more than 20 years since a community band was in existence at SIC.

“Reinstating a band at SIC will further develop our instrumental program and our music department in general. My goal for SIC Concert Band is to become a sound representative of our music program,” said SIC music instructor, Tiffany Kesler.

SIC’s Concert Band is open to all types of instruments, including strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Rehearsals will be on Mondays, beginning Jan. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a concert at the end of the semester, as well as a performance during commencement.

“SIC’s Concert Band will serve as a musical outlet for this region,” said Kesler. “My goal is to create a place for music lovers to practice their crafts, participate in performances and have fun making music. In addition, the band will create connections within the community by bringing together different people. The department will provide as many performance opportunities as possible, including playing in semester concerts and for graduation and other ceremonies.”

Private music instruction is also offered at SIC for those wanting to learn how to play an instrument, or those looking to perfect their skills.

Reinstatement of the Concert Band also coincides with the creation of SIC’s first ever school song, the Alma Mater. Currently, SIC is holding a contest for students and the community to write a short poem that will be used as lyrics for the school song.
